THE 2027 LOCAL SEARCH PLAYBOOK

10 ways to show up on AI search and Google in 2027.

Your customers are asking ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini who to call. These tools recommend a few businesses, not a page of ten links. Here is how to be one of them.

WHY THIS MATTERS NOW

AI picks a shortlist. If you are not on it, you are not in the conversation.

Google still matters. But more people now ask an AI assistant first, and it answers with a handful of names. The good news: most local competitors have not done any of this yet.

  1. 1

    Own your Google Business Profile

It is the first place Google and AI tools look to confirm you exist, where you are and when you are open.

Do this: Claim it, pick the right category, add real photos, hours and services, and post an update every month.

  2. 2

Say exactly what you do, and where

AI answers questions like "best roofer near Ventura". If your site never says "roofer" and "Ventura" together, you are invisible to that question.

Do this: Give each service its own page that names the service, the towns you serve and who it is for.

  3. 3

    Let the AI crawlers in

Many older sites quietly block the bots behind ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity. Blocked means never recommended.

Do this: Check your robots.txt allows GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended.

  4. 4

    Add business schema

Schema is a label maker for machines. It tells them your name, address, phone, services and prices without guessing.

Do this: Add LocalBusiness (or your exact type, like Dentist or Plumber), Service and breadcrumb markup.

  5. 5

    Publish an llms.txt file

It is a short, plain summary of your business written for AI tools. Few local businesses have one yet, so it is an easy edge.

Do this: List what you offer, where, prices if you share them, and links to your key pages.

  6. 6

    Answer the questions customers ask

AI tools quote pages that answer questions clearly. Vague marketing copy gets skipped.

Do this: Write short, direct answers to real questions: cost, timing, service area, what happens first.

  7. 7

Earn reviews, and reply to them

Reviews are the trust signal both Google and AI lean on when choosing who to recommend.

Do this: Ask every happy customer. Reply to every review, good or bad, by name and with specifics.

  8. 8

    Keep your details identical everywhere

If your phone or address differs between Yelp, Google and your site, machines lose confidence in which is right.

Do this: Match name, address, phone and hours across your site, Google, Bing, Apple Maps, Yelp and directories.

  9. 9

    Be fast and mobile-first

Most local searches happen on a phone. Slow, cramped sites lose the visitor and the ranking.

Do this: Load in under a few seconds, use readable text and put a tap-to-call button up top.

  10. 10

Make sure pages are not blank to bots

Some modern sites only fill in after the page loads in a browser. Crawlers often see an empty page.

Do this: Serve real content in the page itself so Google and AI read what customers read.
